Lane Kiffin- Idiot or Genius

"Singing Rocky Top all night long after beating Florida." Exposing "recruiting violations" and all the other things that have become legend in terms of the faux-rivalry between Tennessee and Florida come to fruition today as the Vols take on Florida in the swamp.

The assumption is that Meyer (who's not playing today), Tebow and the crew are going to unload an epic load of whoop ass on the Vols. And this is probably true, but here's something to think about.

When have we ever talked about a game, even a confernce rivalry, between a top-ranked team and a team that's rebuilding. This is the equivalent of this type of attention being paid to a USC/Arizona match-up or a Texas/Kansas match-up. Interesting, but not must see TV. People are waiting anxiously to watch the orange-clad gladiator get fed to the blue lions. And that's where Kiffin's genius (even if accidental) comes in.

If Florida wins by 60 points, it's a victory, but if they when by 30, it was expected. If they win by 20, more points were expected. It's a let down if they win by less than 20. And if Tennessee somehow wins? They really will sing "Rocky Top" all night. Essentially, Kiffin and the Vols can't lose. Unless they lose by 60 that is. All the pressure is on Florida to be the 1,000-pound gorilla they are supposed to be. That pressure is not on USC against Washington today.

So I don't know if this all part of the master plan for Kiffin, but he may have lucked into a nationally televised game in which all the expectations are on the other side.

Saturday Sports Day- 091209

Not too much to report.

-Florida cranking up on Troy during monsoon season in Gainesville. 35-3 at the halftime.
-Wake Forest trying to climb back in the game. Now down 17-10 to Stanford.
-Fresno St. is up 21-17 on Wisconsin. Things aren't looking the best for Bret Bilema.
-And then Wisconsin struck down with a 72-yard touchdown by John Clay.

College Football Saturday 090509[2]

Tenn. vs. Western Kentucky- Tenn. is making a statement right now driving for a TD to go up 56-7 at the top of the fourth quarter.
(later)They finished them off with another TD to win 63-7. 160 yards for Hardesty.

Navy at Ohio St.- Navy had a chance to win with an interception and a TD run by Ricky Dobbs of Navy. However Brian Rolle, OSU, intercepted a two-point conversion and returned it for two points, ending the scare. Final- Ohio St.- 31, Navy- 27

College Football Saturday- 090509

Ohio State v. Navy- Terrelle Pryor with a great slant pass to Sanzenbacher for a TD. Not a huge deal, but boy is it great to see college football again.

- The triple option is got to be one of the most exciting offenses to witness. It always looks a little out of control.

-Navy carves up the Buckeyes on the first drive and gets a 17-yard touchdown from Ricky Dobbs.

Tennessee v. Western Kentucky- Tennessee has fumbled the ball away twice. They don't look particularly good. However, defense got two straight sacks.

Minnesota v. Syracuse- Greg Paulus hits Mike Williams on a 29-yard TD pass. His first collegiate TD. End of 1st. Quarter- Minn- 14, Syracuse- 10

End of 1st. Quarter- Tenn. -0, W. Kentucky- 0

My College Football Picks- 090409

Alabama vs. Va. Tech- Let's make this clear. Va. Tech is not Clemson, so don't expect them to catch the beatdown that the Tigers got in this game last year from Bama. However, with eight starters returner on defense and a freshman starting at running back for Va. Tech, the Hokies are going to have a hard time scoring. The Tide has enough offense to get over the top.

UGA at Oklahoma St.- The Cowboys' high powered offense vs a resurgent Bulldog defense. Both teams have a lot to prove. Kind of a "loser leave town" match. I think this will be a great match-up but I give the slight edge to the home team. I expect big things from Kendall Hunter and Zac Robinson. Dez Bryant doesn't always show up in big games but that can always change. Tough spot for Joe Cox's first start.

BYU vs. Oklahoma- Max Hall is great. And Jermaine Gresham isn't playing today. With that said, expect the Sooners to roll. Big. Huge day for Sam Bradford and Demarco Murray.

Miami at Florida State- What was once a tremendous rivalry has been reduced to an afterthought in the busy opening week. Miami has more brute talent than Fla. State but the Noles have more experience and a comparable amount of talent. They are also at home and have a defense that can get at Jacory Harris, not to mention an O-line that will protect Christian Ponder and open holes for Jermaine Thomas. FSU will take the first step up in the race back to prominence.

Who are you sick of hearing about?

Thanks to ESPN, CBS, Fox, and even Twitter, saturation coverage of sports topics have become unavoidable. But who bugs the hell out of you? Who are you really tired of hearing about? Right now I'm going to run down my top five most overanalyzed sports figures and why I feel that way:

TO- Quite possibly the most overexposed player in football. Being in Buffalo will cause his exposure to take a hit. However, his show will pick up the slack and, if his team falters, which is likely in a tough AFC East, it will be blamed on him. Skip Bayless will continue to have something to talk about. Not sure what he's going to do when TO retires.

Brett Favre- The person who is tied for most overexposed football player ever. He's so overexposed that even the guys at ESPN seem to be sick of him. However, they still played the montage of his greatest plays on Sports Center a couple of nights ago. The same one they played at the end of the last three NFL seasons. Who knows, maybe we will finally get a break.

Tim Tebow- For the record, I am a huge Tim Tebow fan. Not just because of the type of person that he is, on and off the field, but because I grew up as a big Florida fan. While my admiration has waned since leaving Fla. six years ago, I still enjoy their success. With that said, enough already. The problem with college football (and sometimes college basketball) is that they hype atheltes to be larger than life for financial gain. They pick a story and shove it down your throat. While I'm not a Steve Spurrier fan, he had every right to have his Director of Football operations not vote for Tim Tebow as a unanamous preseason All- SEC selection. Still free country right?

Shaq- It's never good when a player ends up on Monday Night Raw. It dosen't help your career. It's not endearing. Shaq has seemingly been popping up everwhere lately. Doing dumb things. Body slamming someone at Raw, showing up at the White House, freestyle rapping, enough already.

Quick Blog about the Elite Eight

UConn vs. Mizzou- Mizzou's speed and attacking style versus UConn's strength and speed, and attacking style. Get the point. UConn is tough, large, athletic and hungry. They know they are good enough to win it all and with impending NCAA sanctions as a rallying cry, look for them to move on. UConn

Vilanova vs. Pitt- A Big East war! Nova is not intimadated by Pitt's toughness and have nothing to lose. They are also the hotter of the two teams coming into the game. It would be easy to pick Nova here, but Pitt seems to have a knack for surviving and getting big plays late by Lavance Fields and DeJuan Blair, while getting great play overall by Sam Young. Pitt

Louisville vs. Michigan St.- L-ville looks primed for a National Championship run. Michigan State will not be intimadated but they are flat out not as athletic as the Cards. The Spartans will try to make this a grinder but Louisville's experience in the Big East has prepared them for this. Louisville

UNC vs. Oklahoma- This is an epic battle between the last two Players of the Year in Blake Griffin and Tyler Hansborough as well as a battle between two great teams. This game could be a final. While the teams match-up well, UNC's depth and experience should preavail. UNC

Bubble Report 3- Buy or Sell

Bubble Report 3

New Mexico- They have won eight of their last nine, including a victories against UNLV and Utah. The lone lost was to conference regular season champ BYU. They are a solid team but don't have a lot of big non-confrence wins. Their biggest was Ole Miss, which isn't very big at all. I'd like to see them do a little more. Sell

Penn State- I think yhe stunning win over Illinois got them in. They helped their cause by getting out of the first round of the Big Ten tournament. Talor Battle has been huge with 17.3 points per game. Buy

Maryland- The Terps kept the momentum rolling with the win over N.C. State tonight. They are looking good after beating WakeForest, even though the lost to Duke. Greavis Vasquez will shine in the tourney. Buy

Florida- After looking like the class of the league early, the Gators dropped critical games to LSU and Tenn (twice.) The Kentucy win helps but their loss to Auburn hurts. Sell

Halftime @ Tech-Clemson

Halftime- G-Tech- 39, Clemson- 39- Tech played tough in the first half and Clinch had 15 points, but once again, Tech has wilted under defensive pressure a little. They are holding serve in what has become a back and fourth battle. Tech has not been able to stop Trevor Booker, who has nine effortless points in the paint. Tanner Smith had 10 points. Tech is still playing a little tight for a team that has nothing to lose.

Bubble Report 2- Buy or Sell

Davidson- Having the most popular (and second best player) in the country will not help. The lost to Butler was a killer because it was the second in a row and a loss against a team competing for the same spot. They don't have any more high profile match-ups and they don't have a cake walk conference. Stephen Curry has got to heal fast and take over the Southern Conference Tournament for them to get in. Sell

Providence- Will the win over Pitt be enough? They are the seventh team in the top conference. They don't have any other quality wins outside of beating Syracuse so they need a little help but if they can win agianst Rutgers and Villanova and maybe get out of the first round of the Big East Tournament, they should be golden. Buy

St. Mary's- Not having Patrick Mills has been trying for what could have been a dream season. They recovered some of this with the win over Utah State. Being swept by Gonzaga is a killer because that is the benchmark for WCC teams. They have a win over Providence, but that only becomes valuable if Providence goes deep in the tournament andif St.Mary's goes deep too. Sell

Boston College- They have some really good wins in a really good conference. Wins over UNC, Duke, FSU should overcome the Harvard loss. We hope so. I hate for the nation to miss out on their lsat chance to see Tyree Rice. Buy

The Bubble- Buy or Sell

Bubble Report

Dayton- A lost to St. Louis really hurts. They have to avoid the swoon they had last season. Chris Wright is a year more seasoned, so that should help. As does a win over Xavier. And one against Marquette. With a 23-4 record, they should be okay. Buy

Miami- The BC win was big because they are competing for ther same spot. The FSU lost was huge because they are competing for the same spot. The UNC loss was a missed opportunity. Miami is 5-8 in the ACC, which is not good enough. They have a great chance to rectify that with games against UVA, G-Tech, and N.C. State remaining. One or two more wins in the ACC Tournament should do it. But for now. . . Sell

Maryland- The UNC win is huge!!! It's against the #3 team in the nation, it's against a hot team, and it brings them to .500 in the ACC. If they can get a win over N.C. State and at least one over Duke or Wake Forest, they are golden. Buy

Illinois State- Losing to Niagra, pretty much puts them out of this argument. They have a 22-6 record and have a win over Creighton, that's about it. One more over Creighton will help, but they probably need to win the Missouri Valley Tournament. Sell

Highlights from Bracketbuster Saturday

-Butler vs. Davidson- Curry is coming on a little, he has 13 points but also has six turnovers. Butler's Heyward has 20 points. It's the reason why they are up 49-39. Butler is also outhustling Davidson. They are playing a lot faster as well.

-It's tough for Vermont to recruit because their aren't many players in the state. However, on the national stage, in a glorified high school gym, they are rockin'. Down 22-20 to Buffalo.

-Non-basketball note: Michael Crabtree out for 6-10 weeks with stress fracture in foot.

Highlights from Bracketbuster Saturday

- Start with a non-bracketbuster game but important none the less. Miami has a touchdown, BC has a field goal and a safety. 7-5, Miami

-Butler vs. Davidson- Stephen Curry is struggling earlier. Perhaps the lingering effects of his ankle injury. As expected, Butler is up 13-7.

- A Star is born- Northeastern is up 48-42 at Wright St. Northeastern has a rich basketball tradition with Jim Calhoun among its former coaches and Reggie Lewis as their most famous player. Also, Stephen Curry's little brother Seth has 22 points for Liberty against Old Dominion. ODU is winning by 20 though.

-Miami is up 42-27 in a must-win game over Boston College. Reggie Jackson just popped a three. Reg-gie!

-Butler vs. Davidson- Curry with the last shot of the half. Seven points in the half. Butler up 34-27.

-Northeastern is about to beat Wright State- up 67-56 with :31.6 remaining. That would be two wins for the Colonial Athletic Association.

NCAA Basketball Update- Contenders

Now that all the confetti has rained down on Raymond James, it's time to shift gears to what could be one the most exciting college basketball seasons in years. There is so much talent around the country that I feel the need to breakdown the contenders, second-tier, up-starts, pretenders in the race for the national championship. Start with contenders:

Contenders to the Crown

UConn- The Huskies are starting to assert their dominance again, which is saying something in the mighty Big East. Tonight's victory at Louisville was huge for them. Haseem Thabeet, Jeff Adrien, A.J Price combine to make them one of the most dominant inside/outside combos in the nation. They also have good experience. If they can stay consistent and not get beat up in league play they may be hard to stop.

Okla- They have perhaps the best player in the nation in Blake Griffin, a talented backcourt, and a great supporting cast. They are also in a weaker conference than the Big East and ACC counterparts, which could be a good and a bad thing. I question their depth but otherwise they are as good as any team in the nation.

UNC- Probably the deepest, most atheltic and most experienced team in the nation. All the loses did was focus them. This team is dangerous. They have something that other teams don't, if they can put it together in the postseason, they can win it all.

Pitt- The roughest, toughest team in the Big East with the best rebounder in Dejuan Blair. They have nearly as much experienced as UNC. They are going to get bumped around in the Big East, but they are also going to be battled tested.

Marquette- They one of the best backcourts and the nation and like Pitt, their tough. They know how to win on the road and they will be battled tested by the Big East.

Saturday Sports Day!-

The Georgia Tech/Wake Forest game has a lot of default importance. Wake is the no. 4 team in the nation and they just beat Duke so that is enough to bring out some media and fans. There are at least three first round draft picks on the court so that scouts and GM's like Kiki Vandeweigh are here. But the pre-game lacks an energy. That's because Tech is losing and downtrodden. If they are going to save this season they have to find ways to do things that they don't normally do.

Halftime- Wake- 43, G-Tech- 41- Tech has come out with renewed intensity and it has caught Wake by surprised. You can see in their efforts they are working harder for rebounds on both ends. Clinch is dazzling in the lane, scoring 15 points in the half. And over time they are getting results on defense, which has allowed them to climb back into the game after going down by eight early. If they would have executed better on offense and not given up quick threes, they would be leading right now. Wake is frustrated; the two technical fouls show it. Tech has also dazzled from the line hitting 75 percent. They have one more half to put together.

Georgia Tech v. Wake Forest- The Recap

Freshman point guard Iman Shumpert was a McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school and is used to having the ball in his hands at crunch time. During Tech’s seven straight losses, that has meant more gut-renching mis-steps than glory. However, with less than two seconds remaining in the game, Shumpert drove into the lane a drained a classic jumper to help Tech defeat no. 6 Wake Forest 76-74.

The Yellow Jackets been knocking on the door of getting the lead on Wake for most of the last ten minutes of the second half, but each time they inched within striking distance a missed free throw or a Jeff Teague (16 points) shot would thwart their efforts. However, Shumpert’s shot to tie the game with 21 seconds left and the game winner were smooth and well-executed. “He’s growing up, he’s a freshman,” said head coach Paul Hewitt of Shumpert. “I told him at the end of the games, you are going to have the ball in your hands and, early on, he was unsuccessful but you don’t stop going to guy that you know has talent and has some courage. And today he made the shot and hopefully this is a hump that he has crossed.”

Those final moments were the culmination of a stellar effort by the Jackets, who showed fire and intensity early as Lewis Clinch weaved through the defense repeatedly on the way to 15 first half points. Wake experienced early success as well going up 26-18 points in the first half behind 11 points by freshman and Norcross alum Al-Farouq Aminu and nine points by James Johnson. Tech cut the lead to 34-33 behind a 15-8 run. Clinch had six points during the stretch. They also may have gotten in the Demon Deacons heads as both Teague and Ishmael Smith were called for technical fouls in the first half.

While the Jackets had a solid first half, there were moments when their execution was lacking. Much of this was cleared up in the second half as Tech went inside often to Gani Lawal and Alade Aminu. Lawal returned to form with 25 points and 10 rebounds. “We felt they didn’t defend the pick and roll that well,” said Lawal. “We wanted to expose their ball screen defense.”

Lawal also went 11-14 from the free throw line and credited intense repetition for the effort. Aminu led the defensive charge with six block shots to go with his 10 points and 13 rebounds. The defense was critical down the stretch as Tech held Wake to seven points over the last eight minutes of the game. Wake’s struggles were part of a fundamental shift in late game execution for the two teams. After hitting an ESPN Classic-worthy game winner against Duke, Wake ended the game with two turnovers; Harvey Hale (previously a Jacket killer) threw the ball away on the inbounds play and Johnson’s desperation heave to end the game. During the same stretch, Tech hit two well-executed plays to seal their first conference win of the season.

The tone in the locker room was interesting after the stunning win. Despite having the crowd rush on to the court afterwards and ending a seven-game losing streak, the players weren’t relieved as much as they were justified. “That shouldn’t happen. We should be the ones understanding that we are supposed to win. So at the same time it’s a good thing, but it’s something we are supposed to do,” said Alade Aminu said of the end of game celebration.

A Tuesday Night in Sports

-Ever notice that there are always old tall guys that look like they used to play ball but you can recognize where they are from at basketball games.

-Halftime- UGA- 38, G-Tech-28- For the most part it was a flat performance by both teams, the difference thus far was individual performances by UGA Terrance Woodbury (11 pts) and Howard Thompkins (13 pts). Tech doesn’t have those performances on their side. Instead, they have a ton of missed shots. They went 32.4 percent from the field in the first half, Clinch has nine points, Peacock has 8 points but Lawal has five points and Shumpert is scoreless. They have shown flashes of intensity on offense and defense but nothing sustained. Their ability to keep up their intensity on both ends and to get Shumpert going will determine the outcome.

Reaction to this week's Bracketology

The first Bracketology of the season was posted on espn.com. It wasn't really affected by yesterday's shake-up at the top of standings. UNC is still a top seed. It was probably affected more by Georgetown defeating UConn last week and then losing to Pitt, the new no. 1. With that said, here are my thoughts on today's Bracketology:

  • Florida State is 13-2 and if they keep pushing, own their home court and steal one or two on the road (i.e. a win over UNC, Duke, or Miami) they could finally get pass NCAA bridesmaid status and launch into the tournament
  • Xavier is a hot team as a presumptive four seed but Dayton is currently 13-1. Xavier shows up in tournaments and wins versus Memphis and Virginia Tech shows that the trend could continue
  • ACC Surprise: Wake Forest 13-0 and no. 4 in the nation. If they keep playing like this, they can lay a legit claim to a one-seed. They have a big game at home against UNC on Sunday.
  • Can the B-East get nine teams? Well, lets see:
  • Pitt- in
  • UConn- in
  • Georgetown - in. Even though they lost to Notre Dame
  • Syracuse- in
  • ND- in
  • Marquette- in
  • Villanova- in
  • L-Ville- in
  • West Virginia- in. Oh yeah, the Big East is great.
